Coffee Table Drawer Bottom Falls Out: Repair or Replace?
Short answer: If the drawer bottom is only loose in its groove and the panel is not warped or cracked, you can usually reglue it and clamp it back in place. If the bottom is swollen, split, or the drawer sides are falling apart, repair will not last; replace the drawer box or, if the table has other failing joints, consider a new coffee table.
Why drawer bottoms come loose
Most coffee table drawers are built with a thin bottom panel, often plywood or particleboard, set into a groove cut into the drawer sides and front. The panel is held in place with glue, small nails, or screws from underneath. Over time, the glue can dry out and crack, or the panel can shift if the drawer is overloaded or exposed to humidity changes.
Particleboard and medium-density fiberboard are common in ready-to-assemble furniture; these engineered woods can swell when wet, which pushes the panel out of its groove. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulates formaldehyde emissions from these composite wood products, but swelling is a physical weakness unrelated to emissions. If the drawer bottom has swollen, it often will not fit back into the groove.
Drawer slides also play a role: a drawer that racks or jams because of a bent slide puts extra stress on the bottom joint. If you are already fixing the bottom, check the slides for alignment and smooth operation. For guidance, see our section on drawer slide quality.
Inspect the drawer before deciding
Remove the drawer and set it on a flat surface. Look at the bottom panel from the underside: is it detached along one edge, or is it completely out? Check whether the panel is flat or has a visible bow. If it is warped, regluing will not hold it flat.
Examine the drawer sides and front. Are the corner joints tight, or are they loose and split? A drawer with failing corner joints will not be stable even if you reattach the bottom. Run a finger along the inside bottom edge to feel if the groove is intact or has chunks missing.
Assess the material of the bottom. If it is particleboard and has swollen near the edges, it will crumble when you try to clamp it. If it is plywood and the edges are still clean, repair is more likely to succeed. Also check for water damage or stains that indicate a leak. This inspection aligns with the guidance on coffee table part replaceability.
When to repair the drawer
You can repair the drawer when the bottom panel is simply loose in its groove, the panel is flat and dry, the groove is clean, and the drawer sides are solid. This is the most common scenario for a drawer that has been lightly used for a few years.
To repair: remove the drawer, clean the groove and the edge of the panel with a dry cloth or a small brush. Apply a thin bead of wood glue along the groove on the inside of the drawer, then slide the panel back in. Wipe off excess glue, turn the drawer upside down, and clamp the panel against the bottom edges of the sides. Let the glue dry for at least a few hours, or overnight if possible.
If the original bottom was held with screws or nails from underneath, you can replace those after gluing. Use screws that are slightly longer if the old holes are stripped. You can also add a couple of small angle brackets under the drawer for extra support, but avoid screws that would poke through the bottom surface. For more assembly and repair tips, see the assembly guide.
When to replace the drawer
Replace the drawer box rather than repair it if any of these are true: the bottom panel is cracked, split, or warped; the panel is swollen particleboard that has lost its shape; the drawer side joints are loose or the sides themselves are split; or the drawer front is separating from the sides.
Even if you successfully glue the bottom back in, a drawer with structural failure elsewhere will soon fail again. Replacing the drawer box is easier than it may sound: many manufacturers use standard sizes, and you can order a replacement from the maker. If the table uses a nonstandard size, you can have a local shop build a new drawer, or you can remove the old drawer and use it as a template.
Before ordering a replacement, measure the drawer opening width, height, and depth, and note the slide type. Our drawer depth guide explains how to measure. If the table itself has multiple failing drawers, wobbly legs, or a damaged top, the cost and effort of a new drawer may not be worth it; a new coffee table could be more practical.
Prevent future failures
Once you have repaired or replaced the drawer, keep it from failing again by not overloading it. A coffee table drawer is meant for remote controls, coasters, and small items, not heavy books or tools. The extra weight stresses the thin bottom panel.
Control humidity in the room, especially if the table is near a window or a heating vent. Sudden changes in moisture can cause wood and engineered panels to expand and contract, which loosens glued joints. Use a dehumidifier in humid climates and avoid placing hot or wet items directly on the table.
If you have children or pets, also secure the table to the wall. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Anchor It campaign recommend anchoring all furniture with drawers to prevent tip-overs. A drawer that falls out is an inconvenience; a tipping table is a safety hazard. See how to anchor a coffee table to the wall for instructions on using furniture anchoring kits.

Questions
Can I use super glue instead of wood glue for a drawer bottom?
Wood glue is better because it fills small gaps and is more flexible. Super glue is brittle and can crack under the stress of sliding the drawer.
How long should I wait before using the drawer after gluing?
Wait at least 12 hours if you used a standard wood glue. The glue needs time to fully cure, especially if the joint carries weight.
Can I screw the drawer bottom back in instead of gluing?
Screws can help hold the panel, but they do not seal the joint the way glue does. Use screws in addition to glue for the strongest hold, and make sure they are short enough not to poke through the drawer interior.
Is a loose drawer bottom a sign the whole table is unsafe?
No, a loose drawer bottom is a cosmetic and functional issue, not usually a safety problem. However, if you have children, anchor the table to the wall to prevent tip-overs, as recommended by the CPSC.
What type of wood is best for a coffee table drawer bottom?
Thin plywood is stronger and more stable than particleboard. Solid wood is also good but may expand and contract more. When buying a new table, look for drawer bottoms made of plywood.
